SCAFATI — Antichi ruderi in contrada Muregine nell'agro pompeiano.

Nel fondo limitrofo all'altro, nel quale nella seconda metà del 1897 furono eseguiti dalla signora Maria Liguori gli scavi, di cui è parola in Notizie 1897, pag.33-34, il proprietario signor Pasquale Malerba ebbe l'autorizzazione di fare scavi, che iniziati il 30 ottobre, furono smessi il 25 novembre 1899.

Anche il signor Malerba, come la Liguori e come tutti gli altri proprietari della valle del Sarno, ebbe a lottare con l'ostacolo delle acque del sottosuolo; e fu quest’ostacolo, a dirittura insormontabile quando non si disponga di mezzi adatti, che determinò il Malerba a smettere lo scavo.

Nell' annessa pianta è rilevato quanto fu scoperto, bene inteso però che in essa non si è potuto indicare altro se non le parti alte degli ambienti, trovandosi il rimanente invaso dalle acque. Per questa speciale condizione dello scavo, non è possibile darne una particolareggiata descrizione. Dirò solo che tutti gli ambienti erano all'atto rustici e che “A” è una vasca di fabbrica. Anche la suppellettile raccolta è assai povera e scarsa, come dalla breve notizia che qui ne dò, seguendo l'ordine di data.

30 ottobre. — Fra le terre superiori: Terracotta. Una gronda in forma di cane, simile a quelle angolari dei compluvi; una tegola con marca illeggibile, una pelvi e un'anfora anepigrafe, priva del fondo.

2 novembre. — A m.1,70 dal piano della campagna: Terracotta. Grande lucerna monolychne, con la marca in lettere rilevate (CIL. X, n.8052,19):

Al di sotto, palma e corona d'alloro. Un vasettino, un pentolino e un'altra lucerna più piccola. Un frammento di tegola con la marca in lettere rilevate:

Piombo. Frammento di una fistula acquaria.

4 novembre. — Fra le terre: Terracotta. Un pignattino rotto.

6 detto. — Alla profondità di m.1,40 dal piano della campagna:

Travertino. Un monopodio scanalato. Vetro. Due unguentari.

Nell’ambiente “B”, in una nicchietta cavata nel muro nord e rivestita di stucco bianco:

Terracotta. Una statuetta (alta con la basetta mill. 195) rappresentante un sacerdote d'Iside. Ha i capelli rasi ed avvolto nel manto, che lascia liberi la spalla dritta: la mano sinistra tra poggia sul petto e il braccio destro abbassato aderisce al fianco. Nell'una delle due nicchiette nel muro ovest, e precisamente in quella a destra di chi guarda:

Terracotta. Una tazzolina in frammenti.

Vetro. Piccolo vasetto frammentato.

Nel medesimo ambiente:

Terracotta. Due piccole patere, uno urceo, una pentola bucata e tre vasettini.

7 novembre. Nel medesimo ambiento:

Vetro. Tre boccettine.

Terracotta. Due piatti.

9 novembre. Fra Le terre superiori dell'ambiente “C”:

Terracotta. Una grossa Lucerna bilychne, avente a rilievo nel disco il busto di Giove con l’aquila dalle ali spiegate.

Un'altra Lucerna con la rappresentanza a rilievo di un agnello nel disco e tre altre lucerne frammentate.

Vetro. Una boccettina.

11 novembre. Nel medesimo ambiente “C”:

Vetro. Un Unguentario.

Terracotta. Un vasettino.

Vi si raccolsero inoltre alcuni avanzi di legno di quercia ai ben conservati dalla presenza dell'acqua (cfr. Notizie cit., pag. 34).

25 novembre. Nello strato di lapillo:

Bronzo. Due grossi anelli con arpione.

SCAFATI — Ancient ruins in the Muregine district in the Pompeian countryside.

On the land adjoining the other, on which in the second half of 1897 Signora Maria Liguori carried out the excavations mentioned in Notizie Gennaio 1898, p. 33-34, the owner Signor Pasquale Malerba was given permission to carry out excavations, which began on 30 October and were stopped on 25 November 1899.

Like Liguori and all the other owners in the Sarno valley, Mr Malerba also had to contend with the obstacle of the underground waters, and it was this obstacle, which is insurmountable when no suitable means are available, that led Malerba to stop digging.

The attached plan shows what was discovered, on the understanding, however, that it was not possible to indicate anything other than the upper parts of the rooms, the rest being invaded by water. Due to the special condition of the excavation, it is not possible to give a detailed description. I will only say that all the rooms were rustic at the time and that "A" is a masonry tank. The furnishings collected are also very poor and scarce, as can be seen from the brief information I will give here, following the order of date.

30 October. - Among the upper soil: Terracotta. A gutter in the form of a dog, similar to the angular ones of the compluvium; a tile with an illegible mark, a basin and an anepigraphic amphora, without its bottom.

2 November. - At 1.70 m from ground level:

Terracotta. Large single light oil lamp, with the mark in raised letters (CIL. X, no.8052,19):

6 November. - At the depth of 1.40 m. from the ground level:

Travertine. A fluted monopodium.

Glass. Two unguentarium.

In room "B", in a niche hollowed out in the north wall and covered with white stucco:

Terracotta. A statuette (height with the base 195mm) representing a priest of Isis. His hair is shaven, and he is wrapped in a mantle, which leaves his straight shoulder free: his left hand rests on his chest and his lowered right arm adheres to his side. In one of the two niches in the west wall, the one to the right of the viewer:

Terracotta. A small cup in fragments,

Glass. Small, fragmented vase.

In the same room:

Terracotta. Two small pots, an urn, a pierced pot and three small vases

7 November. In the same room:

Glass. Three small bottles.

Earthenware. Two plates.

9 November. Between The upper earths of room "C":

Terracotta. A large two light oil-lamp, having in relief in the disc the bust of Jupiter with an eagle with spread wings.

Another oil-lamp with the representation in relief of a lamb in the disc and three other fragmented oil-lamps.

Glass. A small bottle.

11 November. - In the same room "C":

Glass. Unguentarium.

Terracotta. A small vase.

Some leftovers of oak wood were also collected here, well preserved by the presence of water (cf. Notizie cited above, p. 34).

25 November. In the layer of lapilli:

Bronze. Two large rings with hook.

On the many tiles and fragments of tiles collected, I also copied the well-known stamps:
